CLAXTON: Charles C. Willis, Charlie, age 82, of Claxton passed away on October 13th, 2020, while under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice, after an extended illness. Charlie was born in Atlanta to William Leonard and Francis England Willis. He had one brother, William “Bill” Leonard Willis.
Charlie was a graduate of Brown High School, in Atlanta, where he played baseball, basketball, and football. After high school he went to Georgia Tech where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, while playing football for coach Bobby Dodd.
Throughout his career, Charlie owned and operated multiple companies in both Atlanta and Claxton. After a long career he retired in Claxton, which has been his home for the last 19 years.
Charlie loved to spend his time with family and friends or coaching. Charlie always had a passion for sports, but the one he loved most was football. He coached many successful teams, and the passion he had for football could be seen in the countless young men he coached and inspired over the years. He was a member of Rehoboth Missionary Baptist Church.
Charlie was preceded in death by both of his parents, as well as is brother. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Sharon Conley Willis of Claxton, son Russell Scott Willis (Beth) of Atlanta; Susan Leigh Willis of Colorado, Ivey Willis Crutchfield (Charlie) of Atlanta; stepsons Curtis Gary Leggett Jr. (Emily) of Rincon, Justin Matthew Doppel (Morgan) of Pooler; Grandchildren Bonnie Willis and Alexis Rigdon (Matt); nieces Sally and Donna Willis of Atlanta. Charlie also has 2 great grandchildren.
SOCIAL DISTANCING WILL BE OSERVED DURING THE SERVICE DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. MASKS ARE NOT REQUIRED BUT ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
DUE TO COVID-19 THERE WILL NOT BE A VISITATION.
The graveside services will be held at Bulloch Memorial Gardens, 22204 U.S. Highway 80, Statesboro GA 40461, at 10:00 am on Friday October 16th.
In lieu of flowers the family request that remembrances be sent to Rehoboth Missionary Baptist Church, 2331 Campground Road, Claxton, GA 30417 or Ogeechee Area Hospice, 200 Donehoo Street, Statesboro, GA 30458.
