CLAXTON: Jerry Cecil Akins, a devoted family man, proud veteran, and lifelong friend to all who knew him, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service, kindness, and unforgettable stories. After graduating, Jerry began his career with BellSouth before answering the call to serve his country when he was drafted into the United States Military. He proudly served with the Green Berets, the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles” for three years. His time in service shaped the strength, resilience, and compassion that would define the rest of his life. Following his military service, Jerry returned home and resumed his career with BellSouth while building the family he cherished so deeply. After many dedicated years of service, he retired in 2000. Never one to slow down, Jerry went on to start his own business, Astec Communications, where he continued working and connecting with people in the community he loved. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who found peace and joy in nature. He loved canoeing, spending time outdoors, and sharing adventures with family and friends. He also dedicated many years of his life to mentoring young people as Troop Master of Boy Scouts Troop 400, serving faithfully for well over a decade. His guidance and encouragement left a lasting impact on countless young men and families. Jerry had a gift for seeing the best in people, even during difficult times. He never met a stranger and quickly turned everyone he encountered into a friend. Known for his warm heart and endless stories, he could captivate anyone willing to listen with tales that ranged from humorous to heartfelt. Above all else, Jerry loved his family deeply and treasured every moment spent with them. His legacy of friendship, service, storytelling, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
