CLAXTON: Retired Sheriff, Lorin L. Waters, 98, passed away September 16, 2015, at his home, under the compassionate care of a special caregiver, Sylvia Byrd, and, in the last two weeks, Ogeechee Area Hospice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie W. (Lon) Waters and Mary Caroline (Carrie) DeLoach Waters; his wives, Carolyn H. Waters and Ruthan E. Waters; a son, Eric Engstrom; brothers, Wallace, Walton and Luther Waters; sisters, Edna Waters, Eula W. Aaron, Eunice W. Mobley, Nena W. Scott, Nina W. Bradley, Lizzie W. Brewton and Louise W. Blocker.
Lorin was born October 21, 1916, in Evans County, GA. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church, an Army Veteran of WWII, a member of the Georgia Retired Sheriff’s Association and POAG. He retired in 1972, as Sheriff of Evans County, with 22 years in law enforcement. One of his greatest joys was playing “Santa Claus” for many agencies for over 25 years, and also, he became known by the children of Evans County whom he visited at Christmas. He and wife, Mary, were “Mom and Pop” to many others that needed them. Lorin was still active until 3 months ago when his body finally caught up with his age, being almost 99 years old. He was one of the original Sherriff’s to help raise funds for the First Boys Ranch in Hahira, GA., in 1961.
SURVIVORS: his wife of 39 years, Mary Moody Waters; his children, Kenn (Chuck) Waters, Sally W. (Phillip) Moncrief, Jamille M. Engstrom and Rex Engstrom, Scott (Kelli) Griffin, Shelby (Jill) Griffin, Stephen (Gay) Griffin, Stephanie (Dennis) Wilson and Sheila (Tom) Dean; his grandchildren, Matt and Scott Moncrief, Dalton and Claudia Carter, Katie, Emily and Lillie Griffin, Tristan, Trevor, Trenton and Travis Griffin, Stephen (Morgan) and Molly Odom, Clay, Allie and Sam Dean, Benji (Natasha) Wilson, Alan (Patricia) Wilson and Missy (Danny) Merchant; his great-grandchildren, Braxton Odom, Kaiden Johns, A.J. Wilson, Kaiden and Landon Christianson; brother, Leon Waters; sister, Carolyn Anderson; brothers-in-law, B.J. (Matha) Haire, Jerry (Ruby) Moody and Terry (Debbie) Moody; sisters-in-law, Luleen Haire, Geraldine Branch, Vera Harrell, Lavonne (David) Sellers; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
VISITATION: Saturday, September 19, 2015, 2-3:00 p.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home.
FUNERAL: Saturday, September 19, 3:00 p.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tab Smith and Bro. Thomas Kennington officiating. Committal service will follow in the chapel with private burial.
BURIAL: Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.
PALLBEARERS: All of his grandchildren.
HONORARY PALLBEARERS: Active and Retired Law Enforcement.
