CLAXTON: Marie Mitchell Smith, 88, passed away on June 5, 2024, at The Gardens in Statesboro, Georgia. Marie was born in Evans County, Georgia on November 24, 1935 and lived most of her life in Claxton.
Marie was a homemaker and active in her community. She worked in the family business, Pride Pools and Spas, as the payroll manager for fifteen years. She was also a former member of Beta Sigma Phi, The Claxton Mothers Club, Jaycettes, and Eastern Star where she earned the title of Worthy Matron. Marie was a member of Claxton First Church, formerly The First United Methodist Church of Claxton, where she diligently worked with Methodist youth for many years.
Marie’s greatest accomplishments were that of a loyal wife and mother. She was the wife of Gary Edgar Smith for 71 years, having married on May 17, 1953. She was a devoted mother to five children, and later earned the title of Grandma, Granny Ree, and Ree-Ree to nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents, Eli and Grace Mitchell, and twelve siblings.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Gary Smith of Claxton; children, Sherry (Bucky) Buckman of Richmond Hill, Kay (Ray) Smith of Shellman Bluff, Phil (Tami) Smith of Savannah, Alex (Tracie) Smith of Brooklet, and Marshall (April) Smith of Claxton; grandchildren, Brad Smith, Jessica Sikes, Amber Smith, Jade (Jason) Hoffman, Tiffany Smith, Ben Smith, Xander Smith, Peighton Brown, and Hagan Smith; great-grandchild, Sophia Hoffman.
VISITATION: Sunday, June 9, 2024, 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at The Claxton First Church.
FUNERAL: Sunday, June 9, 2024, 3:00 p.m. at The Claxton First Church.
BURIAL: Brewton Cemetery.
