OBITUARY

CLAXTON: Richard Carlyle McCorkle, 83, passed away on March 30, 2016 in East Georgia Regional Hospital, Statesboro, Ga. He was a Native of Bulloch County, but lived in Evans county most of his life. He was a member of the Claxton Church of God. Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and animal lover. He loved Claxton with all of his heart, regaling his family with childhood stories of fishing, charley the horse, cowboys and Indians, comic books, and working at the McCorkle Motel and the family furniture store in his early adulthood.

He had a fine singing voice- he rarely ended a phone call without singing a song, ranging from “lucky old sun” to “the rambling wreck or Ga Tech”. He played a lively boogie woogie on the piano and WWII tunes on the harmonica. He wrote and copyrighted a lovely gospel song “He’s the Lord our God”.

He was devoted to his lovely wife Kitty, his daughters, grandchildren, sisters, nieces and nephews. His last years were spent doting on his beloved cat Pixie, so smart that he referred to her as “The Professor”.

He ran his own insurance agency for 30 years.

He was one of a kind, and will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents C.S. & Katie McCorkle.

SURVIVORS: His wife of 45 years, Darlene McCorkle of Claxton; two daughters, Sylvia Cross of Decatur, Ga. and Debra (Stewart) Wells, of Fairview, N.C.; two sisters, Winselle (Charles) Hearn of Claxton, and Kathryn (Ray) Westberry of Savannah; three grandchildren, Desiree Cross, Sarah (Adam) Wells, and Anna Wells; two great-grandchildren, Cartman & Schroeder Cross-Dunn; several nieces and nephews.
